Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town Volunteer at ACM Lifting Lives Camp

Posted on Jun 28, 2011

The 2nd Annual ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp is underway in Nashville this week and stars including Little Big Town and Carrie Underwood are lending their time to the program. The camp is open to campers with developmental disabilities who are also talented in music and serves as a study of Williams syndrome and other developmental disabilities. ACM Lifting Lives, the charitable arm of the Academy of Country Music, funds the camp, which allows the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities to advance it's mission of improving the lives of those with developmental disabilities.

On Monday, campers were treated to a songwriting workshop with Gary Allan, Odie Blackmon and Brett James. They crafted a song from concept to final lyrics and will record the song with Carrie and producer Mark Bright. Last year's song penned by the campers, Chris Young and Brett was performed by campers during the 46th Annual ACM Awards. Later Monday evening, Little Big Town participated in Art N'Music, a session that allowed campers to create Warhol style self-portraits while using music to inspire them.

Tuesday night, Wynonna Judd will join campers for karaoke at a Winner's Bar and on Friday, the final day of camp, campers will get to perform live with Darius Rucker at the Grand Ole Opry, including a reprise of their ACM Awards performance. They will also share the original song written on Monday.

In 2010, ACM Lifting Lives began fully funding what was then called the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Music Camp. Developmental disabilities are a group of physical and mental conditions that includes genetic syndromes and autism spectrum disorders and develop anytime during infancy up to 22 years of age and affects every day life activities such as language, mobility, learning, self-help, and independent living. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that developmental disabilities affect one in five individuals.

Carrie Underwood Remembers Her 'Dangerous' First Kiss

Posted on Jun 27, 2011

Carrie Underwood recently penned a column about her experiences with love and dating for the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia, tracing her first kiss (which she deemed "dangerous") all the way through to her marriage to hockey hubby Mike Fisher. She writes honestly and openly about how dating life became difficult after her big 'American Idol' win, too. It's the Reader's Digest version of Underwood's dating dossier.

On her first kiss: Opposites attract, as the good girl liked the bad boy. Underwood writes: "My first kiss happened at 14. It was with a skater guy who had long hair and baggy jeans. He didn't live in my town, and I was attracted to him because he was different from the other boys at school. Funnily enough, I know him now and he's the opposite to how he was back then, but at that time he was as dangerous as I could get."

On why she had to wait until college to date: Dating was nearly non-existent at her Oklahoma high school, due to the limited selection of potential boyfriends. So Underwood waited till she arrived at college, saying, "Mine was a really small school in a really small town, so it wasn't until college that I had a boyfriend."

On the first and only time she was dumped: Underwood reveals that her first relationship didn't last long and that while she was the one who was broken up with, it marked a one-time only occurrence in her love life. She reveals, "[It] was the first and last time I ever got dumped. It taught me a lot about myself, that I didn't like getting my heart broken and that sometimes people don't love you back. But that's OK, because my life would have worked out different if he had."

On why she pens songs about two-timing men: Underwood may be super sweet, but that doesn't mean she won't get a little vengeful in her music. She sings songs about two-timing men because it’s good for catharsis and aids in getting her anger out. See, even good girls get angry! "With songs like 'Before He Cheats' and 'Cowboy Casanova,' I sing about two-timing men and love gone wrong, as it's a fun way to get aggression out in songs. I love a good attitude song. I've had my share of love gone wrong and guys not treating me the way any woman should be treated, so I definitely sing from experience," she admits.

On post-'American Idol' dates: Winning 'American Idol' may have been great for her career, but not so much when it came to her love life in the immediate aftermath of the big win! "Right after winning, I went out with a guy from back home. He was the sweetest guy and perfect in so many ways, but he couldn't handle what I did. He couldn't deal with me being away so much and that I made the money, and so after a few months I had to end it," Underwood recalls.

On her husband, Mike Fisher: Underwood still gushes like a schoolgirl (or a college girl, if you go by her dating spectrum) about the man who won her hand in marriage, calling him "a warm, caring person and has a wonderful faith in people that I sometimes lack. He's a gorgeous heart wrapped in a gorgeous man." Aw!

At Wisconsin's Country Fest, Carrie Underwood is a surefire highlight

Posted on Jun 26, 2011

As Carrie Underwood took to the Country Fest stage last night, undoubtedly, Wisconsin was expecting a treat.

It is hard to imagine, at times, to think that Carrie once graced the American Idol stage. She has grown by leaps and bounds in six years. As part of the 25th Annual Country Fest, she appeared on the same stage that so many of Country music's female legends have performed. Following in the footsteps of Reba, Tanya Tucker, Tammy Wynette, Pam Tillis, and Martina McBride, to name a few, Carrie proved that she is just as capable of engaging and entertaining a crowd.

One reviewer, Alyssa Waters, from Leader-Telegram, said of Underwood's vocals, "[they were] spot on and gave chills at times." Reportedly, she opened her rousing 90-minute, 16-song set with "Cowboy Casanova," the platinum-selling lead single from Play On. This single, upon its release in 2009, became the fastest climbing Country single on the charts for that year. There is no mistaking that Miss Fisher is familar with chart-toppers.

She continued her set with #1 singles "Wasted" and "Undo It" before peppering in lesser-known songs "Quitter" and "I Know You Won't." To follow up those tracks, she belted on "So Small," "Temporary Home," and a mash-up of "Jesus Take the Wheel" and "How Great Thou Art."

Carrie Underwood and Gary LeVox Spotted 'Hangin' Tough' at NKOTBSB Concert

Posted on Jun 24, 2011

Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts singer Gary LeVox are fans of NKOTBSB (that's boy bands New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys together, for those of you who might not know). They're proud, go-to-the-concert, throw-your-hands-in-the-air-and-wave-'em-like-you-just-don't-care NKOTBSB fans, at least in Underwood's case, as you'll see from the fan-captured video below of Underwood rocking out.

Both country stars caught the NKOTBSB show at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville this week, and Underwood (and her husband, Mike Fisher) and LeVox get their photos taken with Howie Dorough from the Backstreet Boys. Underwood was even filmed having the time of her life during the concert, waving her arm back and forth during New Kids on the Block's 'Hangin' Tough.' Who knew that Underwood was such a NKOTB fan? She must have been around 7-years-old when the group was at the height of its fame, so perhaps little Carrie was all about Jordan Knight and Co.

Even Underwood's husband, Fisher, whose arm was in a sling, enjoyed a little boy band fun, as seen in the backstage picture. We'll assume that Underwood dragged her man to the show, and that makes him a very good guy.

OFFSTAGE: Carrie Underwood to Put Down Rural Roots

Posted on Jun 20, 2011

It is almost impossible to imagine how big Carrie Underwood's new home will be. Mostly because it's so hard to imagine how big her property is. Underwood and hubby Mike Fisher just bought about 400 acres in a rural part of Nashville. So if my math is right, that's like 300 football fields. Which is a lot of privacy. Which I'm sure they will love. I live extremely close to my neighbors, so if I need to borrow a cup of sugar I can just yell out the window, "Can I borrow a cup of sugar?" It's the only life I've ever known, so the thought of being neighborless would be a huge culture shock. But that kind of close-knit community is not for everyone. The good thing about Underwood's new 'hood is that if she and Fisher ever do get lonely, they can wander east a few miles and go to Puckett's Grocery and Restaurant in Leipers Fork. That's the place that is like half restaurant, half music venue. So you may wander in for a fried bologna sandwich and end up staying for a show. Come to think of it, maybe that's why Underwood chose the part of town she did. And who knows? Maybe when she's not touring, she'll head into Puckett's for open mic night.

Underwood Wows Sydney

Posted on Jun 17, 2011

Country music superstar Carrie Underwood performed a six-song showcase at the Museum of Contemporary Art last night for assorted media and music industry execs.

The 2005 American Idol winner is in Australia to promote the re-release of her new album Play On, which was originally released in 2009.

While not a huge name in this country, the 28-year-old is a megastar at home having notched up 10 #1 hits and racking up 13 million album sales.

And if the reception she received last night is any indication, it's only a matter of time before Carrie experiences similar success here.

The pretty blonde was introduced by Sony CEO Denis Handlin and wowed the crowd with brilliant renditions of her hits Cowboy Casanova, So Small and Last Name.

She then brought out the big guns, singing her iconic smash Jesus, Take The Wheel, current single Undo It (below) and arguably her signature song Before He Cheats.

A special Australian tour edition of Carrie's album Play On has just been released and comes with seven bonus tracks.

Check out some photos from the event below.
